Everyone deserves a getaway, but that doesn't mean you have to break the piggy bank! While planning a trip can be a bit stressful, it can ultimately provide peace of mind. Whether you're planning a day trip or a week-long vacation, here are some tips to help you make the most of your relaxation time!
Destination and Planned Dates
Do you want to relax, immerse yourself in culture, or go on an adventure? It's important to research your destination! Understanding where you are going can help ensure your financial security and provide you with endless fun. When planning your vacation dates, always consider the time of year and any events that may be occurring during your visit, as these can affect prices and availability.
Here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, our typical off-season runs from November through February. This period is ideal for those who prefer to avoid the hustle and bustle of tourism. The off-season not only means fewer crowds but also lower prices. However, keep in mind that this time may also bring less-than-ideal weather conditions.
Budgeting for Your Trip
When planning your finances, consider the 50/30/20 Rule. Financial planners recommend allocating 50% of your after-tax income to essential needs such as bills and groceries, 30% to discretionary spending, and 20% to savings. For travel budgeting, a week-long vacation per person is estimated to cost around $1,984, which breaks down to approximately $240 per day per person in 2025. It’s important to set a realistic budget and to factor in all expenses, including lodging, souvenirs, excursions, and the inevitable trip to the gas station for overpriced snacks and drinks.
Look for deals! Many hotels offer discounts during the off-season, such as buy one night, get one free, or complimentary breakfasts. Additionally, consider using public transportation. Although gas prices have increased, that doesn’t mean your credit card balance has to. Plan your travel route carefully, check the public transport schedule, and weigh your options. Finally, budget for emergencies, such as a flat tire or unexpected medical visits. Being prepared can make all the difference!
Packing for your stay
Create a checklist of all the essentials you’ll need for your trip, including clothing, snacks, electronics, their chargers, wallets, and hygiene products. If your trip lasts five days, pack for six. If it’s just one day, pack for two! Being overprepared is better than being underprepared. Packing extra items can help you avoid the need to buy something you already have at home. There's no reason to create an unexpected expense; being prepared is key!
Upon Arrival
Plan a trip to pick up some essentials for your beach getaway. I've learned the hard way not to pack shampoo, as it has spilled in my bag on multiple occasions, forcing me to wash my clothes before I even get to the beach. That's why I always make a stop at my local Walmart. Make sure to grab shampoo, conditioner, beach towels, sunscreen, and even sunglasses, as these items are often forgotten and need to be purchased for the weekend.
Don't forget to stock up on snacks and cooking supplies if your accommodation has a kitchen. Snacks for the beach and a good book can be essential for a relaxing day by the water. Additionally, consider bringing hand-held fans and sand buckets to enhance your beach experience and make it more enjoyable.
Vacationing means different things to different people, but these tips can help reduce the fear of missing out and enhance the fun. Taking the time to budget, plan, and research will benefit you and your family both this summer and throughout the year.
